Child Photography – My Name is Masha and I’m a princess

As I was working on this post the song “Dream” by Priscilla Ahn kept floating through my head. I met Masha a few weeks after her fifth birthday at The Crossings Park in Colonie and she won my heart. You may or may not know a child with Down Syndrome, if you do, you know they are just as vibrant, fun loving and amazing as any child.  So I wanted to give Masha a birthday photo shoot she would remember!

Masha’s journey is worth understanding and knowing.  Her mom has kept a blog detailing the journey of not only Masha but her siblings as well.  Please take a moment to read about it here at

I was going to do this whole vlog thing about the shoot, but I held back. This blog isn’t about me or my work. It’s all about Masha and the heart of a child who will shower you with love.  It’s about Down Syndrom. It’s about cupcakes 🙂 As I was talking to her mom, she made me pause when she said..”Masha is just like any child. People need to know that Downs Syndrome doesn’t make them any less of a person. She still runs and plays. I hear her singing song to her sister in the morning. She’s amazing.”

This photo is my favorite!!! I think we all get a little excited over a sweet cupcake being handed to us…we all be so expressive!!

(Lyrics From Priscilla Ahn’s Dream)

I was a little girl alone in my little world who dreamed of a little home for me.
I played pretend between the trees, and fed my house-guests bark and leaves, and laughed in my pretty bed of green.

I had a dream
That I could fly from the highest swing.
I had a dream.

Long walks in the dark through woods grown behind the park, I asked God who I’m supposed to be.
The stars smiled down on me, God answered in silent reverie. I said a prayer and fell asleep.

I had a dream
That I could fly from the highest tree.
I had a dream.

Introducing baby sister…Autumn! Autumn is also from the Ukraine.

A walk with big brother…

I had a dream
That I could fly from the highest tree.
I had a dream.

Now I’m old and feeling grey. I don’t know what’s left to say about this life I’m willing to leave.
I lived it full and I lived it well, there’s many tales I’ve lived to tell. I’m ready now, I’m ready now, I’m ready now to fly from the highest wing.

I had a dream

Thank you for taking the time to look through this post. Down Syndrome does not define a child or an adult. It is merely a part of their journey and only some of us our blessed enough to join hands and walk the journey with them.

  1. I think sometimes we become blind and then God gives us these precious gifts and a new vision and understanding just what perfection truly means. She is just beautiful!

  2. Oh my goodness Amber, you made me cry. Thank you so much for what you have done for Masha. I know she loved every minute of the time she spent with you. I love what you did with the pics.
